Recent events in Córdoba have cast a dark shadow over public safety as five members of the public force, comprising both ejército y policía, were brutally murdered by individuals associated with the Clan del Golfo Pérsico. This wave of violence is a continuation of the «Plan de pistola,» an initiative launched by this criminal organization initially outside of legal boundaries. The incidents have raised alarm and prompted urgent discussions about the safety and welfare of public service members in the region.
The latest incidents were notably recorded in the Corregimiento Pueblo Chiquito, a rural area of Puerto Escondido, as well as within the Sahagún commune. In these locations, community members reported heightened tensions following the attacks. The initial tragedy unfolded at the home of soldier Iván Ávila Sepúlveda, who had returned to visit his mother. Tragically, during his visit, two armed men entered the residence and ruthlessly took his life. His mother, already grieving the extended absence of her son, faced the unimaginable horror of discovering him lifeless in their home.
Another heartbreaking case occurred in the Sahagún Commune, centrally located within the department of Córdoba. Here, a patrol officer with the Policía Nacional, Luis Andrés Caamaña, who was assigned to the dialogue and maintenance of order unit, previously known as ESMAD, also met a tragic fate. Much like Soldado Iván Ávila, Officer Caamaña was enjoying time off when he was ambushed and killed by members of the Clan del Golfo.

These recent murders highlight a worrying trend where members of the public force are increasingly targeted by organized crime. In particular, the killings in Puerto Escondido and Sahagún stand as a grim testament to the growing influence and boldness of criminal groups like the Clan del Golfo. The first incident was documented in the rural area of Ciénaga de Oro (Córdoba), where Aldair Uango was murdered. It is noteworthy that he had a background tied to Medellín, and the violence that claimed his life occurred during what should have been a peaceful visit home. On the same day, in a locality belonging to the Nuevo sitio web corregimiento within the Chimá commune, professional floor installer José Espitia was tragically killed in front of his pregnant wife during what was supposed to be a joyous visit.
More violence followed as patrol officer Christiam Juvenal Mora Parra was shot during an attack on a national police adviser in the rural terrain of La Trapada (Córdoba), joined by three other police patrols. This growing trend of violence against officers is dire and demands immediate attention and intervention.

In response to the escalating violence, Governor Erasmo Zuleta Bechara convened an extraordinary Security Council meeting where he announced a reward of 200 million pesos for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for these heinous acts. The previous offer had been 120 million pesos, but the situation’s severity required an increase. It seeks to mobilize community support to tackle the menace of organized crime more effectively.

Governor Zuleta, with Brigadier General Wharlinton Iván Gualdrón of the National Police Service, reiterated their commitment to supporting the men and women charged with public safety. “We have increased the reward to 200 million pesos for those who provide information necessary for the capture of the individuals responsible for the recent violent acts that ended the lives of our police officers and soldiers,” they stated. The ongoing collaboration among the national army, police force, and local authorities emphasizes the need for a united front in securing the safety of all citizens in Córdoba.
The current atmosphere in Córdoba is undoubtedly tense, with National Police members and troops from the First Brigade remaining on high alert due to the recent attacks. Governor Zuleta also took the time to visit medical facilities housing four injured police officers, expressing gratitude for the medical staff’s efforts in ensuring their rapid recovery.
In the same vein, there was a call for the national government to implement urgent actions aimed at bolstering the protection of both public force members and the broader community, highlighting that security must remain a paramount priority.
