The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Tourism has successfully concluded the Evaluation of the National Invitation to the Initiative «The Best Tourist Villages» for the year 2025. The selected areas include Tolima, Sutatenza (Paico), Paicol (Huila), Conservation (Nariño), Jericho (Antioquia), and Providencia and Santa Catalina Islas-Archipiélago and Santa Catalina. This initiative is aimed at recognizing and promoting rural destinations that offer unique cultural and natural experiences.
This year, a total of 28 municipalities from 13 different departments submitted their applications, showcasing proposals that embody the diversity, richness, and dedication of Colombia’s rural territories towards sustainable tourism. This wide array of applications underwent a rigorous process that involved an overview of the fulfillment of requirements, technical evaluation, and qualitative assessments to determine the most deserving candidates for this prestigious recognition.
The selection process was anchored in nine distinct criteria established by the UN Tourism framework. These included aspects such as natural and cultural resources, cultural promotion, and sustainable practices encompassing economic, social, and environmental dimensions. Key factors also included the tourism value chain, effective management, infrastructure adequacy, and health and safety considerations. A significant emphasis was placed on the commitment to sustainable village tourism, the organization of local tourism offerings, and the effective collaboration with communities in the area. Notably, the ability of each municipality to highlight its unique attributes and project them in a strategic manner was especially valued in this selection process.
Among the selected municipalities, Paicol, often referred to as «La Puerta del Viente,» stands out as a remarkable tourist destination located in western Huila. Paicol captivates visitors with its vibrant streets, rich gastronomic offerings, and stunning colonial architecture. The municipality’s tourism strategy is centered around its natural and cultural heritage, actively promoting authentic and sustainable tourism experiences. Here, the natural beauty seamlessly intertwines with historical significance, creating an unparalleled experience for both residents and travelers alike.
The initiative not only aims to shine a light on these remarkable destinations but also supports the broader goal of fostering sustainable tourism practices across Colombia. By highlighting these unique rural communities, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Tourism hopes to encourage other municipalities to adopt similar sustainable practices while promoting their own local customs and traditions. This approach not only enhances the economic viability of these regions but also ensures that their cultural and ecological heritage is preserved for future generations. This edition serves as a vital step towards cementing Colombia’s reputation as an emerging leader in sustainable tourism.
